As for the head, it's basically a 12 bar, and you've got a 13 up there voiced like that.
Key Concepts
- With your thumb, you have to play the seven and the one at the same time.
- So that's what's going on: the right hand and the left hand creating a pretty simple bass line.
- Usual kind of bass setting there, and we're kind of swinging.
Emphasis and Movement
What's really important is getting that emphasis. That's what moves it along; it's coming off that F. Particularly when you're playing it on your own like that:
- There's no kit.
- There's no movement around what you're doing.
- You've got to create that movement.
Completeness in Sound
So, it sounds pretty good, but it's not really complete. You need something to answer that line. You need a bit of that punctuation we've talked about before.
Right Hand Punctuation
- What you do is add a bit of right hand punctuation on your bottom manual, which is your bass setting.
- This should happen in between the lead line.
And he does that throughout the tune.
Answering Your Soloing
What you can do to answer your soloing is to kind of answer it on the bass, but with an actual chord rather than just a single note.
For example:
- You might play something like that kind of thing.
This breaks it up, gives you a bit of spread face, and keeps it tasty. Remember to stay somewhat restrained; you don't want to give it all away.
