Ki B Duo MK2 Overview
Here we have a Ki B Duo MK2. It's crafted by an Italian company that has recently been producing these very faithful reproductions of the C3s and B3s.
Key Features
Unlike other clones, this unit is completely laid out just as you'd find it on the original:
- Tabs and vibrato switch
- Drawbars exactly in the same place
- Presets included
Tone Controls
Additionally, you have several controls at your disposal:
-
Key Click:
- Zero lots initially regarded as a fault; now seen as important for jazz tones.
-
Overdrive:
- I typically set this around 2 o'clock.
- It's digital overdrive, not as effective as driving a real valve amp.
-
Crosstalk:
- An inherent fault in Hammonds, leading to spillage between the pickups of different notes.
- My C3 has a bit of this, being an old, road-worn model.
-
Reverb:
- Not particularly fond of the built-in reverb; I don't use much.
- However, you can control the volume and the decay time.
-
Bass and Treble Controls:
- Offers versatility in sound shaping.
Additional Features
-
Pitch Bend Control:
- I've never used this; it's against the rules, in my book.
-
Leslie Simulation:
- The built-in simulation is not optimal; I prefer using an external pedal like the Neo Ventilator.
Sound Quality
All controls are positioned as you'd find them on a classic organ:
- The vibrato function is particularly good.
- Sounding through an old Roland keyboard amp, it produces a decent tone.
Concerns
Despite being one of the most advanced clones available, it lacks:
- The realistic engagement of contacts when keys are pressed.
- Although they find ways to make it affordable, it's not responsive enough for certain percussive elements, making them sound a bit clunky.
Usage
The instrument is great for percussive sounds only needing one tone, which minimizes tonal clashes:
-
Jazz Players:
- Very popular among jazz players doing left-hand bass.
-
Visual Presence:
- It looks cool from off stage.
- The physical presence is important; if you're using a small X-stand, it doesn't command confidence.
Personal Touches
To add a bit of vintage flair:
- I placed gaffer tape over the logo on the back.
- This adds a more classic feel when on stage, minimizing the modern logo's impact.
Conclusion
Overall, the Ki B Duo MK2 is a very good product. While it might not fully replicate the classic experience, it is an effective option for those seeking the sound and feel of a traditional organ.
