Country Drumming: Incorporating the Bass Drum
In this section, we're going to look at country drumming. Specifically for this course, we'll focus on adding the bass drum, which we haven't yet played. It will be exciting to incorporate that into some of the patterns we've already played.
The Country Music Scene
Country music is great to explore in Nashville, America, where the country music scene thrives. There remains a very healthy music industry there, both live and in the studio, featuring an amazing number of brilliant musicians.
Recommended Listening
I highly recommend you check out a range of country music, going back to the traditional stuff. Notable artists include:
- Johnny Cash
- Dolly Parton
- Taylor Swift (especially her early music, which incorporated elements of country)
The Use of Brushes in Country Music
One interesting aspect of country music is the use of brushes.
- Brushes tend to have wire bristles like these ones.
- You can also find them with nylon bristles, which provide a bit more attack on the drum.
When using brushes in a percussive way—actually hitting the drum—the wire brushes give a nice attack as well.
Achieving a Swish Sound
In my experience as a jazz drummer, brushes can be used to achieve a swish sound. This effect occurs when the bristles are laid not completely flat on the drum head but slightly flatter.
- This combination of bristles gliding over a coated drum head creates a unique sound.
- Coated drum heads (like this one) offer a little bit of resistance, which enhances the swish effect, while smoother, clear heads may not produce the same sound.
In country music, brushes are used more rhythmically. This rolling snare drum technique can create a groove that is subtly different from playing with sticks.
Alternative Tools: Hot Rods
Another interesting tool is a hybrid between a stick and a brush—hot rods.
- Originally, these were bamboo sticks taped together.
- They produce a slightly softer sound than sticks but offer more attack than brushes.
Hot rods can be effective for playing full grooves, providing a versatile option for drummers.
Conclusion
These are just a few different tools you can use in country drumming. Exploring these options can enhance your drumming experience and broaden your musical versatility.
