12-Bar "Oo" Exercise

This exercise features a long 12-bar "Oo."

Posture

  • Try sitting or standing
  • Determine which position works best for you
  • Ensure your posture is nice and straight

Note: This exercise is the counterbalance to the previous one, so be mindful of the following:

  • The in-breath should be slow and taken low in the body.
  • When you do the "Oo," ensure it is held as long, steady, and controlled as possible with a small, focused sound.

Exercise Instructions

1. Start the Exercise:

  • "Here's the first one."
  • Start to breathe.
  • Keep breathing.

Count:

  • 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. (We're halfway)
  • 7, 8, 9, 10, 11. (We're almost there)
  • 12. Well done!

2. Increase the Volume:

  • Now, this one steadily keeps getting louder all the way to the 12 count.
  • "Here we go."
  • Breathe.

Count:

  • 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11.
  • 12.

3. Decrease the Volume:

  • This next one does the exact opposite, starting loud and then going softer all the way to 12.
  • Breathe.

Count:

  • 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12.

4. Build Up and Soften:

  • Now this one builds up to the 6 count and then goes soft again to the 12 count.
  • Breathe.

Count:

  • 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12.

5. Opposite Dynamics:

  • This one does the opposite again. It starts loudly, goes soft to 6, and loud to 12.
  • Breathe.

Count:

  • 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12.

6. Final Dynamics:

  • Now, this last one goes loud to 3, soft to 6, loud to 9, and soft to 12.
  • Breathe.

Count:

  • 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12.

In the academic world, Kim spent a decade in various leadership positions of the British Voice Association as Head of Communications, past President and Director. She has many years of institutional teaching experience as a Principal/Senior Lecturer at Leeds College of Music; London College of Music respectively and was the Head of Vocals at Vocaltech (now BIMM London).

Her educational work features in many masters; doctoral theses and in compendiums such as “Training Contemporary Commercial Singers” (Compton), “Teaching Singing in the 21st Century” (Springer) and “The Ultimate Guide To Singing” (TC-Helicon).
