Understanding Consonants in Singing
The other important part of pronouncing words in singing, apart from vowels, involves consonants.
What are Consonants?
Consonants are all the other letters in the alphabet apart from A, E, I, O, and U, which you were introduced to in the last exercise.
Importance of Consonants
- Intelligibility of Lyrics: Consonants play a crucial role in making the lyrics understandable.
- Musical Rhythm: They also enhance the rhythm of the music.
Tips for Clear Pronunciation
You've really got to use your tongue and your lips to pronounce the words:
- Crisply: Aim for clarity.
- Precisely: Focus on the correct articulation.

In the academic world, Kim spent a decade in various leadership positions of the British Voice Association as Head of Communications, past President and Director. She has many years of institutional teaching experience as a Principal/Senior Lecturer at Leeds College of Music; London College of Music respectively and was the Head of Vocals at Vocaltech (now BIMM London).
Her educational work features in many masters; doctoral theses and in compendiums such as “Training Contemporary Commercial Singers” (Compton), “Teaching Singing in the 21st Century” (Springer) and “The Ultimate Guide To Singing” (TC-Helicon).
