Level Three: Breathing Exercise
Welcome to Level Three!
We're going to start with a breathing exercise that is the big brother of the staccato breathing exercise introduced to you in Level One. This one is more challenging and it also introduces the musical concept of rhythmic subdivisions:
- Subdivisions of the main pulse beat into 2,
- 3, and
-
Key Concepts
This exercise incorporates:
-
Sipping Inwards: Little gentle sips where the abdomen expands as the breath comes in, but be careful not to overfill with air.
-
Out Breath Support: It also utilizes the support muscles that you learned about in Level One.
Demonstration
Let me demonstrate it for you.
Interspersed within this exercise, we will take a big long inhale and then have a long exhale to explore how much control is developing.
On the in breath:
- Take it slowly,
- Your arms come up to shoulder height like this.
On the out breath:
- The arms come back down again
- As the lower abdominal muscles come inwards and upwards on a steady basis.
