Understanding Your Breathing Mechanism

Let's start with getting to know your breathing mechanism. Make sure you maintain good posture throughout this exercise and breathe low in your body where you feel the movement in the abdominal area.

Your shoulders and your chest shouldn't rise and fall with a breath.

Exercise Levels

Level 1: Small Breaths

  1. Four small sips of air in.
  2. Four short hisses of air out.
    • In and out.
    • In and out.
    • In. Just make them small.
    • And out.
    • In, out.

Tips:

  • Make sure you don't overfill.
  • Keep it smooth:
    • In, in.

Level 2: Variations

  • Now four Js. Smooth in.
  • Four Vs. Smooth in.
  • Four Zs. Smooth in.

Back to J.

  • In and V.
  • In and Z.

Level 3: Increased Counts

  • Now eight in.
  • Eight out.
    • Keep them small.
    • And out.

Repeat:

  • Small sips in.

  • S.

  • And in.

  • In, in, in, in.

  • And out:

    • Out, out, out, out, out, out, out.
    • And in. Little tiny sips.

Level 4: Long Sips

Now here's a long, slow sip in.

  • Breathe in. Don't overfill.

  • And 8J. Slow sip in.

    • Just drink that breath.
    • Slow, low breath.
  • And Z.

Level 5: Extended Breaths

Now we're going to do 16 in, 16 out.

  • Keep them tiny.
    • And out.
    • Out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out.
    • Out. And in. T.

Focus on:

  • The gentle lifting of the abdominal muscles.
  • In and out.

Final Step

Prepare for a long, slow sip in.

  • Raise your arms as you're breathing in.
  • Long out. Put the arms back down again.
  • Raise the arms up to shoulder height.
  • And out.

Feel those abs lifting gently.

  • And in.
  • Here's the last one:
    • Out. Slowly deflate and don't let the posture collapse.
    • Keep it strong.
