Level Two: Breathing Exercise

Welcome to level two!

Introduction

We're going to start with a breathing exercise again to continue our breathing development journey. This one introduces you to the concept of catch breaths.

Catch breaths are essential for singing songs, where you need to take a quick, deep inhalation followed by a long, controlled exhalation.

Exercise Breakdown

This exercise will be done in two parts:

  1. Unvoiced Exercise

    • This part uses breathing without the voice.
    • It sounds like this:
      • Quick, deep inhale.
      • Steady, hissing exhale while engaging the lower abdominal muscles.
    • Here's how it looks when I do it:
      • I take the air in quickly and deeply.
      • My stomach muscles come inwards and upwards steadily as I hiss out.

    I'll do it for you one more time:

  2. Voiced Exercise

    • In the voiced version, we eliminate the sipping sound entirely.
    • This is important because you do not use this sound when singing a song.
    • It sounds like this:

In the academic world, Kim spent a decade in various leadership positions of the British Voice Association as Head of Communications, past President and Director. She has many years of institutional teaching experience as a Principal/Senior Lecturer at Leeds College of Music; London College of Music respectively and was the Head of Vocals at Vocaltech (now BIMM London).

Her educational work features in many masters; doctoral theses and in compendiums such as “Training Contemporary Commercial Singers” (Compton), “Teaching Singing in the 21st Century” (Springer) and “The Ultimate Guide To Singing” (TC-Helicon).
