Warm-Up Sirens
These really strange sounding exercises are something you've probably heard singers doing in their dressing rooms. Perhaps you've even been in a car with a singer who's warming up before a gig.
What Are Warm-Up Sirens?
Warm-up sirens are where you:
- Slide from your lowest note up through to your highest note
- Gently slide back down again
- Smoothly transition through the change point in the middle
These exercises involve all sorts of weird and wonderful sounds.
Structure of a Warm-Up
A warm-up needs to be:
- Short: Just a few minutes long
- Sweet: Engaging and enjoyable
- Effective: Preparing you for vocal demands
Phases of a Warm-Up:
- Low Intensity: Start gently
- Mid Intensity: Build up focus and resonance
- High Intensity: Push your vocal range
This structure helps you get ready for:
- Rehearsals
- Practice sessions
- Recordings
- Gigs
Exercises to Expect
You can expect to do some crazy things like:
-
Lip Trill (Lip Bubble):
- This exercise sounds like this: [insert sound here]
-
Tongue Trill:
- Similar to purring like a cat.
- If you're unable to produce an "R" with your tongue, replace it with the Lip Trumpet.
- This also sounds like this: [insert sound here] , just as effective.
Mid Intensity
In the mid-intensity phase, you have exercises that help you focus on the resonant quality of your singing voice.
High Intensity
In the high-intensity phase, you'll work on your full vocal range. This might sound like this: [insert sound here].
Final Phase
Finally, leave the real muscly stuff until the end. Your loudest voice should always be saved for last, and you should only check in with it briefly:
- Sounds like this: "Yeah, yeah, yeah."
