Lesson transcript

Introduction to Licks in Vocal Melodies

In the previous level, I introduced the concept of licks, those little decorations or embellishments that get added to a vocal melody. We did a very basic set of them in that level, but the licks in this level are:

  • Much longer
  • Much more complicated

Breakdown of the Licks

This new lick has three main stages. Let's break it down:

First Stage

  • This stage introduces the initial melody.

Second Stage

  • Whoa. Whoa. Yes.
  • It has a nice little stylistic flip here.

Third Stage

  • Note that it uses chest voice lower down,
  • Then it flips and goes into your head voice.

This lick actually integrates both types of voices that are generally used in pop singing.
