Understanding Your Breathing Mechanism
Let's start with getting to know your breathing mechanism. Make sure you maintain good posture throughout this exercise and breathe low in your body where you feel the movement in the abdominal area.
Your shoulders and your chest shouldn't rise and fall with a breath.
Exercise Levels
Level 1: Small Breaths
- Four small sips of air in.
- Four short hisses of air out.
- In and out.
- In and out.
- In. Just make them small.
- And out.
- In, out.
Tips:
- Make sure you don't overfill.
- Keep it smooth:
- In, in.
Level 2: Variations
- Now four Js. Smooth in.
- Four Vs. Smooth in.
- Four Zs. Smooth in.
Back to J.
- In and V.
- In and Z.
Level 3: Increased Counts
- Now eight in.
- Eight out.
- Keep them small.
- And out.
Repeat:

Focus on:
- The gentle lifting of the abdominal muscles.

Final Step
Prepare for a long, slow sip in.
- Raise your arms as you're breathing in.
- Long out. Put the arms back down again.
- Raise the arms up to shoulder height.
- And out.
Feel those abs lifting gently.
- And in.
- Here's the last one:
- Out. Slowly deflate and don't let the posture collapse.

In the academic world, Kim spent a decade in various leadership positions of the British Voice Association as Head of Communications, past President and Director. She has many years of institutional teaching experience as a Principal/Senior Lecturer at Leeds College of Music; London College of Music respectively and was the Head of Vocals at Vocaltech (now BIMM London).
Her educational work features in many masters; doctoral theses and in compendiums such as “Training Contemporary Commercial Singers” (Compton), “Teaching Singing in the 21st Century” (Springer) and “The Ultimate Guide To Singing” (TC-Helicon).
