This course is an introduction to the mandolin, by way of the bluegrass tradition. Led by Tom Bekeny, an acclaimed fiddler and mandolinist based in the Bay Area, known for his use of the mandolin in jazz as well as bluegrass.
Tom starts with the basics, getting to know your instrument and learning classic picking patterns and rhythmic chordal styles. At every stage techniques are placed in the context of tunes, and this course includes 5 tunes, including 'Bile 'Em Cabbage Down', 'Dark Hollow', and 'On & ON'.
Each lesson includes tablature as a downloadable PDF, including for all tunes. Before long you'll be playing classic tunes from the Mandolin repertorie incorporating advanaced techniques like cross picking and split string technique. This is an ideal course for beginners, those coming from other instruments like violin or guitar.
