Drum Groove Lesson: Example Four
In example four, we're going to be joining together everything we've been practicing, and we're going to form our first proper drum groove.
Key Components of the Groove:
- Hi-hats in unison with the bass drum
- Hi-hats in unison with the snare
This creates the normal kind of groove that you would hear. We are all working towards playing the piece Power Trip.
Important Notes:
- This playing example is a two-bar pattern.
- Here’s how it will work:
- I will play two bars.
- Then, there will be a whole bar of rest.
- Following the rest, there will be a bar of counting.
- You will then play your two bars.
- Afterward, rest for one bar.
- We will do another counting.
Sequence Breakdown:
- I play: 2 bars
- Rest: 1 bar
- Counting: 1 bar
- You play: 2 bars
- Rest: 1 bar
- Counting: 1 bar
We will repeat this process until we’re all finished.
Counting out loud:
1, 2, 3, 4.
