Understanding Racks in Music Production

This video will be all about racks, which give you the ability to manage more than one chain for processing either MIDI data or audio.

Overview of Racks

  • Just like single devices in device view, the content of a rack can be seen as a single device.
  • They can be placed according to the same rules as individual devices.
  • The internal order in device chains is the same as in the device view of tracks.

Types of Racks

There are four types of racks, starting with the Audio Effect Rack.

1. Audio Effect Rack

  • Functionality: Can only host audio effects in chains.
  • Location: Find it in the browser under Audio Effects > Audio Effect Rack.
  • Example: Let's add a modulation rhythmic preset of an audio effect track to the emberat track (muted for now).
  • Chain Structure:
    • Wet Chain: Contains effects such as Corpus, Compressor, and Beat Repeat.
    • Dry Chain: Does not contain any effects.

2. MIDI Effect Rack

  • Functionality: Find it under MIDI Effects > MIDI Effect Rack.
  • Example: We could add this to the impulse we built ourselves, such as the Glitch Machine.
  • Positioning: Added before the instrument, affecting the MIDI signal.
  • Chain and Devices:
    • Contains an Arpeggiator and Velocity MIDI Effect.
    • Macros: Parameters can be mapped to macros for easy adjustment.

Parallel Operation

  • All effect tracks operate in parallel.
  • When returning to the audio effect rack, the chains also operate in parallel.
  • Signal Flow: The signal flows left to right and is processed through effects before being mixed and sent out.

Considerations

  • Be cautious with the number of effect racks added; more devices increase CPU usage.
  • More is not always better.

3. Instrument Rack

  • Creation: Select devices, right-click, and choose Group to create an instrument rack.
  • Flexibility: Can contain all device types: MIDI effects, instruments, and audio effects.
  • Adding Chains:
    • You can mix instruments and add MIDI effects or audio effects in several chains.
  • Creating an Empty Rack:
    • Drag the respective instrument rack (e.g., from MIDI) to create a new track with an empty instrument rack.

Features of Instrument Racks

  • Macs: Eight macros can be MIDI mapped to a bank of knobs.
  • Chain List: Drag and drop devices, rename, and color chains.
  • Editing Commands: Familiar commands apply here.
  • Hot Swap Buttons: Swap devices and browse presets.

4. Drum Rack

  • Location: Can be found in Instruments > Drum Rack.
  • Structure: An empty drum rack contains multiple chains, each assigned to one MIDI note (pads).
  • Hot Swap: Click to add single hits.
  • Sound Assignment: For example, pads C1 to D2 represent specific sounds.
