Using Life as a Rewire Master with Reason

In this video, I want to show you how you can use Life as a Rewire Master. And we're gonna rewire Life with Reason.

Starting Life

First, you need to start Life, because the Rewire Master always has to be started first. We've already done that.

Bit Depth Considerations

An important thing to take into account is that both the Rewire Master and the Rewire Slave have to be the same bit depth:

  • If you run Life in 32 bit, you have to make sure that you run Reason in 32 bit as well.
  • Reason actually runs by default in 64 bit.

I've included a link on the page that contains instructions on how to actually run Reason in 32 bit. If you run Life in 64 bit, then it should be fine unless you've changed it in Reason.

Setting Up Reason

Now, let's start Reason as well.

  • We could either set up the Reason rack from scratch or load a song.
  • I'm going to set up something using the Song Starter template.

Configuring Live's MIDI Track

Now, here in Live:

  1. Unfold the In/Out section first.
  2. In the MIDI track under MIDI 2, choose Reason to see what's possible to select.

For example, I could just choose the piano as the MIDI instrument.

  • Then, I need to arm the track.
  • To actually hear the audio from Reason, we have to set it up in Live as well.

Setting Up Audio from Reason

To get audio back from Reason:

  1. Choose Audio from Reason.
  2. This would be the mix in Reason; we can choose that for now.

Additionally, we can set the monitoring to:

  • In (to hear it)
  • Auto (when we want to record it, then record).

Now, when I play something, you can hear it.

Setting Up Multiple Instruments

We can also set up more than just one Reason instrument, of course:

  • For instance, we could choose the drums.

This is audible in here as well because we only took the mix down.

Setting Up Individual Channels

If you want to set up individual channels that are routed back into Live:

  1. Go into Reason and click the Tab button.
  2. Unfold the instrument, and then take the Direct Out.
  3. Take the left one (for example) and plug it into the audio output that you want.

I'm going to choose 3 and 4.

Then, we can go back into Live and choose 3 and 4.

Now, in Life, you can just work as usual. You can record MIDI clips or also record the audio that is routed back from Reason.
