Example Four: The Dog

In this example, we're referencing the Dog, which is a piece that we're going to be playing shortly.

Eighth Note Bass Drums

  • I see that there are some eighth note bass drums we need to be aware of.
  • Really focus on locking those in with your hi-hats if you can.

Drum Fill in Bar Four

  • In bar four, there's a little drum fill:

    • Some eighth note snares followed by a quarter note snare that lands with a hi-hat.
  • We need to think a little bit about our sticking here:

    • We tend to play the hi-hats with our right hand if we're right-handed.
    • Therefore, the snare on beat four will be played with the left hand.

Movement Between Hi-Hats and Snares

  • Regardless of the sticking, there needs to be some movement between the hi-hats and snares.
  • I’ll probably play:
    • Right, Left, Left on the snare and play the hi-hat with the right hand.

Breakdown of Beats

  • For the snare on:
    • Beat Three: Play with the right.
    • And of Three: Play with the left.
    • Beat Four: Play with the left.
    • Hi-Hat on Beat Four: Play with the right.

Count

  • 1, 2, 3, 4.
