New Exercise Introduction

Next, I'm going to introduce you to a new exercise. This is totally brand new!

Focus of the Exercise

This exercise is going to focus on a similar aspect as we did in the "tongue out" exercise. It will emphasize:

  • Crystal clear clarity
  • Getting more punch and cut in the voice

Exercise Instructions

To get a feel for this, I want you all to try saying:

"Nay, nay, nay."

Imagine you're a whiny, bratty little kid:
"Neigh, neigh, neigh."
That's how we want to approach this specific exercise!

It helps to really act it out with your facial expressions, embracing the part of a really annoying, whiny kid.

Tone Scale Practice

Let's put this on the five-tone scale:
"Nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, nay."

Great job! Now, let's do it again:
"Nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, nay."

Key Points to Remember

  • Open Vertically, Not Horizontally:
In the earlier part of this course, I spoke about ensuring we open vertically, not horizontally.

  • Bright, Wide Open Vowel:
We really want to smile into the sound. So, this requires a lot of facial expression.

Avoiding Muffled Sounds

I don't want to hear:

  • "Nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, nay" (in a muffled tone)

Instead, I want you to overdo it! This will help us work out this specific part of the voice. Let's hear it clearly:
"Nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, nay, nay."

This focuses a lot of energy and cut out of the nose.

Next Steps

Try that out, and then jump over to the audio portion, so you can do the entire exercise!
