La GA Exercise
So, what I want you to do for this exercise is the following:
-
Drop Your Jaw
Let your tongue do all the movement during this exercise. -
Keep the Jaw Still
We want to try to keep the jaw still as much as possible. The best way to monitor this is:- Put a finger on your chin
- Look at yourself in the mirror while you're doing this exercise.
How to Perform the Exercise
I like to call this the La GA exercise. It's going to sound like this:
- One of the keys is to try to make it sound as normal as possible and not allow the jaw to move.
Note: You'll notice that your jaw will want to move more and more the higher you go.
Example
So, it's going to look like this:
- "La Gala Gala."
And again, I might look like a ventriloquist dummy, but that's because I don't want to use any of my facial muscles and have them interfere with what's going on in my throat.
Independence of Jaw and Tongue
Something that many of you are going to notice at first is this type of approach. A lot of singers want to add that dependency of the jaw and the tongue. Here, we're going to be fostering that independence.
Full Exercise:
You'll be able to do the full exercise in the audio portion of this module of the course.
About the instructor

Adam Mishan is a vocal coach who taught himself to sing. His videos document the journey from not being able to hold a pitch to singing with real control, and that path now shapes how he teaches - over 200,000 people follow along on YouTube. In his courses you'll work on pitch, breath support, tone and range in small, repeatable steps, the same way he built his own voice. read more
