Final Exercise: Combining Neck and Shoulder Movements

The last exercise for this module is going to combine the neck movement and the shoulder movement of the previous two exercises on a consonant-vowel combination.

Exercise Overview

The exercise will sound like this:

"Mum, mum, mum, mum, mum."

  • By using the consonant, we're actually giving the voice something to push off of the vocal cords.
  • This builds pressure, with the M sound allowing your voice to kind of rev up, similar to the way a swimmer propels himself off the wall.
  • The M provides a point of resistance for the voice.

Movement Technique

  • We will move the neck around, keeping it nice and loose, while rolling the shoulders at the same time.
  • The neck movement doesn't have to be as precise as it was previously, as it might be hard to keep it while moving the shoulders as well.
  • Just keep the head loose on the shoulders; it doesn't have to be a massive movement, just a little bit of movement as you move the shoulders.

Practice Routine

  • We're going to do a simple "mama," keeping the whole system moving as you're doing it.
  • This exercise is designed to help release a lot of tension that might have been holding you back previously when singing the "ah" scale.

Conclusion

Finally, we will come back to the "ah" without any physical movement and observe the difference this 15-minute stretch of exercise has made to the voice.

Weekly Workout Routine

This is what your workout routine is going to look like for Days 1 through 4:

  • Be sure to find the MP3s that are attached to this video module.
  • Once you've seen the demonstration of how these exercises work, it's going to be much more efficient for you to practice with the audio alone.
  • Feel free to refer back to this video anytime you need for clarification.

I will see you guys on Day 5 for the next one!
