The Limitless Possibilities in Today's Music Industry
So the great thing about the music industry today is that the sky's the limit. If you can think up an idea, you can put it out there and make it happen.
My Journey into Living Room Shows
When I decided to pursue music full-time and released my album on my own label, I found myself with nothing to do for the month of July. I thought, What am I going to do now?
An Idea is Born
I just posted on social networks:
"Would anyone like to book me to come play in your living room?"
I had seen other musician friends of mine do similar things. While it wasn't my original idea, I thought, I'll give this a try.
The result? It was amazing!
- Enough people were interested in the idea
- Many asked: How does this work? What do I need to do?
Thus, I set up a little Living Room tour.
What is a Living Room Show?
A Living Room show is where a fan books you to come and perform. They essentially host a small party, and you entertain their guests. To ensure a smooth experience:
- Establish clear terms and conditions.
- Maintain good communication with the host.
Key Points for Success
- Expectation Management:
- Let them know what to expect.
- You may say, I am going to play for an hour unplugged.
- Guest Count:
- Make sure they can bring at least 15 or 20 guests.
- Ensure everyone knows what's happening.
Donations Over Tickets
Most Living Room shows work on a donation basis, as selling tickets to private shows can be legally tricky. I find that alternative shows, like Living Room performances, can be more lucrative than traditional gigs because:
- You connect directly with your fans.
- The setting is intimate and special.
A Unique Experience
It's a truly unique experience. You never return to the same living room twice, making each performance one-of-a-kind. While it might not suit every artist due to its intimate nature, the direct connection often results in fans being more than happy to pay
- Twice
- Even three times
as much as they would for a traditional music venue.
Merchandise Opportunities
During these shows, you can sell:
- CDs
- T-shirts
- Other memorabilia
Fans are eager to purchase tokens of the special experience they've just witnessed.
Alternative Gigs and Busking
Exploring Other Avenues:
- Busking is another fantastic way to promote your music.
- I haven't done much busking, but I know many who make a habit of it.
They often busk in the afternoon in the town where they have an evening show. This not only promotes the evening event but also allows for some extra earnings.
Conclusion
The music industry thrives on innovation. Whatever suits your music, it's all about being resourceful and finding opportunities to connect with your audience!
About the instructor

The Closest Thing to Crazy'.
