Envelopes and Automating Instrument Effects

Great. Next, we're going to look at envelopes and automating our instrument effects.

Envelopes

Within envelopes, I can choose all sorts of different controls.

• MIDI controls will be pitch bend.
  • So I can do something like this: let's pitch this one down.

But then I also have things to control the instruments.

• If I press smooth synth lead, I have all these different parameters found within this instrument.
• So let's just shift + tab to look at that.

Right here, I have all these different things, and what I can do, for instance, is right-click and show automation on that filter and just draw things in.

So now we see that automation happening within the instrument.

This is just touching on using envelopes.

Loop Length and Start

Finally, we have the loop length and start.

• This is just like an audio sample in the way that I can move this.
• This is the loop brace; I can move it over here.
• But if I don't have this looped, we can move the start point, and this is the end point.

So now let's play. It's going to play through here and stop.

• You can tell because it grays out where it's not going to play.

That's the loop brace up here at the top. All you have to do is press loop.

We also have our start and end length, and we have our start and end amount.

That's a very basic look at editing MIDI within Live. Some of the cool tools that we have, like Legato Invert, those are super fun to play with.
