Music Industry Insights: Perspectives from Established Artists
Ed O'Brien
"My name's Ed O'Brien and I play guitar and other stuff in a band called Radiohead."
Roxanne de Bastian
"So my name's Roxanne de Bastian. I'm a singer-songwriter. I grew up in Berlin and moved to England about seven years ago to start my music career."
Sandy Shaw
"My name is Sandy Shaw. I'm a singer."
Katie Melua
"I'm Katie Melua, and I'm a musician. I've been working in the music industry since I was 18."
Jeremy Pritchard
"I'm Jeremy Pritchard. I play bass in a band called Everything Everything."
Imogen Heap
"Hello, I'm Imogen Heap. I'm a musician, recording artist, producer; I do lots of things and I've been doing this professionally for about 22 years now."
The Business Side of Music
"When I started making music, I did not think that I would have to spend as much time as I do looking at spreadsheets. That's not very rock and roll."
- Understanding the Business:
- You need to learn a little about the business side to understand what's going on around you.
- Losing sight of it completely can leave you overwhelmed by the speed of the industry.
- However, it's important not to let it eclipse your artistry.
Striking a Balance
"Ultimately, it's all about creating an environment whereby you have artistic freedom."
- In Radiohead, we strive to ensure that:
- The business follows the art.
- The business is crucial for the art to flourish.
"If you don't get the commerce right and the business right, then the art can't blossom."
Changing Landscape of the Music Industry
"When I was coming up in the music industry, that was like 22 years ago now. It was a very, very different landscape."
- Challenges in the Past:
- You did your best to get a record deal and hoped they would spend money on you.
- If lucky, you might get a song played on the radio and achieve success.
"I didn't have that story, actually. There are many different ways to reach that point now, but it's really hard."
- Modern Landscape:
- It's tough to shout above the noise; there are so many releases and countless routes.
- This environment can feel quite terrifying.
Embracing the Entrepreneurial Spirit
"I think the thing which, for me, doesn't make it terrifying is being in those conversations: helping develop services, understanding technology, and what it means to be an artist now."
- Evolving Role of Artists:
- You are also an entrepreneur.
- Explore various avenues to connect with your audience.
"There's always going to be the Nick Drake, a super shy artist who writes beautiful songs and doesn't do anything else. But that is so the exception."
- The Reality:
- You cannot simply lean back and focus solely on writing songs.
- Engagement with fans, social media presence, and thinking about your image are all important.
"I don't believe that you can go very far if you're going to have that attitude."

The Closest Thing to Crazy'.
