Navigating the Music Business: Key Considerations
"It's a tough business, it's a cutthroat business, and it's a business based on fear."
Understanding the Landscape
- Uncertainty in Success:
- No one knows for certain what's going to be a hit.
- Things can come out of the blue, genres change, and tastes evolve.
- What is great one minute may be forgotten the next.
Building Your Team
For me, it's essential to focus on:
- The People You Want:
- What skills do they need to possess to help you reach your goals?
- Knowing your destination is critical.
Choosing the Right Manager
-
If you're looking for a manager:
- Are they experienced with major pop stars who do covers, or are they aligned with your artistic vision?
- For example, if you're aiming for a "Radiohead" style, a manager focused on children's TV may not be the best fit.
-
Communicate Your Vision:
-
Clearly express your goals to potential managers.
-
If fame is your primary goal and the person can deliver, that may work for you.
-
However, if you are looking for long-term growth, consider your strengths:
- Business Acumen:
- If you're not great at the business side, seek a skilled business manager.
- You may also need a good accountant or lawyer.
- Business Acumen:
-
Building Relationships with Industry Professionals
-
Essential team members include:
- Accountant
- Lawyer
- Manager
- A&R Representative
-
Evaluate Professionalism:
- If someone entices you with free tickets, parties, and perks, ask yourself:
- "Is this how I want to be managed?"
- "Is this what I truly need?"
- If someone entices you with free tickets, parties, and perks, ask yourself:
-
Assess Their Contribution:
- Look for tangible results in what they can offer.
- "I will do this for you," should be followed by evidence of their success.
Be Cautious with Offers
- If one person offers you a deal:
- Remember, there will be many others willing to do the same.
- Take your time: Never settle for the first offer.
About the instructor
