Music Lesson: Exploring Vocal Ranges

This time, we're going to take the exercise down, and I want you to be aware that there's a big crossover between the male range and the female range.

Vocal Ranges

  • I will sing with a jazz style, going down as far as is comfortable.
  • For me personally, if you're a female voice, you might find that you can get lower than that or not as low as that.
  • It's fine. Remember, each voice is unique, and that's what's wonderful about voices.

Exercise Instructions

So, we're going to work downwards this time. When you're doing this exercise, just work where you're comfortable. That's the golden rule: always feel comfortable.

  • For the male voice, like Jaz here, he has a very versatile range. He can sing high and very low.
  • Male voices also have distinct categories.
    • If you're in a choir, a tenor is considered a higher male voice, while a bass has a lower male voice.
  • Don't worry about that too much yet, but just be aware that all different voices, regardless of gender, have their own range.

Practice Session

Now, we're going to go down and just see where you get to. Don't force it.

  • I don't want anyone singing too low; it's not really singing. Just wherever it's comfortable is good.

Starting Note

Let's try that.

  • We're going to start on an A, please.
  • Should we do it on an R? Is that good for you?

Ready after 4:

  1. 2
  2. 3
  3. 4

Your turn.

Ready and go down.

Turn whatever sound you like, Jaz.

This time, on Three and A.

Ready? And then we'll go to hum.

  1. Ready and
  2. 3
  3. 4

This one on O:

Your turn, 1. 2. 3. 4.

Good! Remember, stay comfortable on R.

  1. 3 and R.
  2. Your turn and
  3. Stay comfortable on O.
  4. 3 and good.

Let's stay with the O:

  • O.

I'm going to leave Jaz to it now.

So, Jaz, whatever you want to sing is good.

  1. 5

Keep it easy and well done.

Final Note:

  • Don't worry if you didn't get that low; it's quite a low voice. Just always work where you're comfortable.
