About this course

Chris Haigh is a pro violinist based in the UK. He's played with the likes of Alison Moyet, Bob Geldof and Morcheeba. He's also a renowned fiddle expert and educator.

This course covers the second half of his best-selling book Exploring Jazz Violin and takes you from basic chord construction to playing advanced harmonies inspired by the greats. The course ends with a lesson called "The Big Night", getting you ready for your first live gig.

In this course Chris starts out showing you very easy ways to improvise, which he's perfected over years of teaching and workshops with classical and folk players who break out into a sweat at the mere thought of improvisation.

Chris will teach you the fundamentals of chords:

  • chord construction
  • Major7, minor7 and flat7 chords
  • the II-V-I
  • understanding the cycle of fifths
  • diminished and augmented chords
  • Minor 7b5/7b9
  • slash and sus chords
  • learning the styles of jazz violin greats such as Stephane Grappelli, Joe Venuti, Stuff Smith and Jean-Luc Ponty

Ideally, you'll have taken the first part of the course to get familiar with jazz playing and improvisation.

Throughout the course, Chris will use several jazz melodies to demonstrate particular ideas, and the course comes with backing tracks so you can play along and try your own ideas and improvisation.

If you want to master jazz playing and improvisation, this is the course for you. Let's get started!
