Jazz Violin Lesson: Mastering Swing Bowing Patterns

Now, for this lesson and for all of the other lessons that we're going to do, I'm going to give you an assignment at the end.

Important Note
It's very important that you don't think that watching this video once and trying out the exercises once is going to do you a lot of good, because it isn't.

What you really need to do is absolutely master each and every one of the things that I show you. No one said jazz violin was going to be easy. This is a serious piece of work you've undertaken.

Practice Assignment

In this case, you need to practice each of the four swing bowing patterns that we've done:

  • Separate Bows
  • Chain Bowing
  • 1 and 3
  • 5 and 3

You have to practice these over and over again so that you have absolutely mastered them.

As you go forward with the other lessons, keep referring back to this idea. Every new tune that we play will require you to remember this idea of swing bowing and the different bowing patterns.

Final Thoughts
So stick at it, keep coming back to these things, and get them so that they're absolutely part of your playing.

In the next lesson, we're going to be looking at how to play an actual tune.
