Assignment Overview

Your assignment for this lesson, as it was for Giovannutti, is as follows:

Step 1: Explore Stefan Grappelli's Recordings

  • Go out and gather a variety of recordings of Stefan Grappelli, preferably from different periods of his career.
  • Note: His playing evolved significantly over the years.

Step 2: Recognize and Learn Riffs

  • Listen for and try to recognize some of the riffs that I've shown you.
  • Aim to learn a few of your own riffs.

Step 3: Practice with Backing Tracks

  • Practice these riffs over the backing for Swing Parisienne.

Step 4: Discover Standard Tunes

  • Look for as many tunes that are standards from the hot club style, including:
    • Lady Be Good
    • Sweet Georgia Brown
    • Autumn Leaves

Once you've gathered and practiced these tunes, you'll be able to play them with other musicians!
