Lesson transcript:

Exploring Improvisation: The Bridge Between Jazz and Modern Music

So, these are just a few of the sort of links between Django, Jo Pass, and my own music in terms of being an improviser. There are techniques that are ever-present; they're always relevant.

The Importance of Studying Early Players

It kind of just shows you that if you study these earlier players in a thorough way and with some precision, those techniques can be used when we're improvising over pieces right up to the modern day.

  • While the harmony might seem miles away from a piece by Django Reinhardt, melodically, we're thinking very much with the same mindset.
  • That's the beauty of being an improvising jazz guitarist in the 21st century: we have a wealth of influences to draw from and a rich heritage to rely upon.

Versatility in Music

I don't know, it's almost like we become the modern-day session musicians because we can jump into different styles very easily.

  • If someone calls you up wanting you to play on some folk music, it's very easy to dive into that world.
  • A blues band calls you up? You're able to do it.
  • What about classical music? We are often required to acclimatize ourselves with sight reading as jazz guitarists.

Dedication to Jazz Guitar

To really dedicate oneself to jazz guitar in this day and age, you will find a wealth of performance and work opportunities available. This diversity forces you to draw upon all these disparate influences.

  • Even if they might seem unattainable at first, it's always worth sticking by it and staying true to your vision.

Conclusion

I think within this journey, there's something for everyone.

So, I hope you've enjoyed this mini journey into my composition, St. Brian. Enjoy playing along with the backing track, playing the melody, and learning the chords. Good luck!
