La cadena de señal
Lesson time: (5min 26sec)

Lesson transcript:
Understanding Your Amplified Sound
It all starts from the sound that your pickup is making. That is the bedrock of your amplified sound. There are various things you can do to enhance this sound:
1. Choose the Right Pickup
- Get the best pickup possible for your instrument.
2. Use a Quality Preamp
- A preamp can greatly enhance the signal coming from your pickup. This step is often overlooked.
- Learn about the signal chain, which includes:
- Bow
- String
- Bridge
- Pickup
- Manipulating this signal chain will drastically affect the sound produced by your pickup.
Experimentation Encouraged
I urge you to experiment with these components. Don't just take my word for it, try it out for yourself!
Recommended Gear
The Alex Preamp
- This is the preamp made by Grace Design.
- I've been waiting for a product like this for 20 years!
Features include:
- Mute button
- Boost switch
- Fully parametric mid-range
- Highly adjustable high, mid, and low ranges
Sound Representation
The goal is to closely represent the sound of my acoustic violin in an electric format.
- I'm using a cleaner amplifier and sending a direct signal to you:
"That's with an effect on, whoops!"
Tonal Properties
It's important to note:
- You will never find a pickup that sounds just like your acoustic violin.
- Just like you differentiate between playing Mozart and Brahms, recognize the tonal properties of your acoustic vs. electric instruments.
Tips for Electric Sound
-
Roll off the high end when playing an electric stringed instrument, especially violin:
- Sound technicians sometimes mistakenly expect a violin to sound trebly.
- Instead, aim for a balanced tone.
-
Tame the low end.
-
Understand how your stringed instrument works to achieve the sound you desire.
Learn Your Gear
Exploring various equipment is fun, but knowing how each piece works is crucial for achieving the sound you want.
- When selecting a preamp, inquire about settings:
- Low range frequency
- Mid frequency
- High and extra high frequencies
- Properly set the gain.
Tuning and Frequency
Know how your acoustic instrument relates to frequency settings:
- In the U.S., standard tuning is typically at 440Hz, while in Europe, it's often 441Hz or 442Hz.
- Learning these details is essential.
Frequency Analysis
Using recording software like Logic can be incredibly helpful:
- Record yourself playing scales slowly.
- Use an EQ frequency analyzer to identify pitch peaks.
This analysis will enhance your understanding of your violin's sound across the frequency spectrum, allowing you to adjust accordingly.
Conclusion
While this may seem a bit technical, it's necessary. Now, let's move on to the fun aspects, the toys!
