Music Lesson: Understanding the Dominant Chord and the Cycle of Fifths
So, having established that a V chord creates tension and therefore anticipation of resolution to the I chord, I'm going to call the V chord a dominant chord. This is a term used in classical music to indicate the V chord in a perfect cadence.
The Cycle of Fifths
I'm going to organize my seventh chords in a cycle and create a kind of loop of unresolving chords for you to practice.
- C7 will be the fifth of F.
- I'm then not going to resolve my F; I'll keep that as an F7.
- This will become the fifth of B flat.
- Next, B flat will become the fifth of E flat.
- Then, E flat will become the fifth of A flat.
And so we go round this cycle until, after 12 keys, you find yourself back at C.
This exercise is a really, really useful way to hear this continuing sense of tension and resolution and to practice finding your tritone interval between your third and sevenths all the way around the Cycle of Fifths.
