Lesson: G Major Chord
Example 2 is our first look at a G open chord.
Understanding the G Major Chord
- G Major Chord: As we said previously, if it just says G, no other information, it's telling us it's a G major chord.
How to Play the G Chord

Locate the G Note:
- Play the G note on the high E string. This is the third fret on the high E string (the skinny one).

Strumming Technique:
- Strum down from the G string all the way down through the B to the E.

Finger Placement:
- Use your ring finger (third finger) to get that G note.
Playing the Chord
- In this example, we're going to play in whole notes (four beats each), making sure we're pushing down the whole time.
- Each chord should sound nice and smooth with no gaps in between strums.
Tips for Strumming
- It's worth noting that we should be playing this with our pick.
- Use just the tip of your pick, as we mentioned earlier. A small tip allows you to get into the strings and brush them down smoothly.
- If you show too much of the tip, you might hit some strings by accident. A shorter tip helps in being more accurate with your plucking.
- This way, you can hit the strings you want rather than unintended ones above.
Practice
Let's give that G chord a go with the backing track.
- We're going to play it four times as four beat chords (whole notes).
- Remember to hold your finger down the whole time, ensuring a nice smooth connection between each strum.

Auf der Bühne trat er im Jazz Cafe als Vorband der Soulsängerin Jocelyn Brown auf, dazu in Clubs und auf Festivals wie Ronnie Scott's, Troy Bar, The Watford Colosseum, Camden Assembly, Kensington Roof Gardens, Notting Hill Arts Club, Meraki Festival und Sundown Festival. Auf Platte und im Radio hat Tommy Live-Sessions für BBC Three Counties Introducing, Vibe FM und Pulse 88 eingespielt, mit Tracks, die auf BBC Radio 1 und Radio 2 liefen. Aufgenommen hat er in Studios wie South Lanes Brighton, Hempstead Road und Titan Studios mit Produzenten wie Steph Carter (Gallows, Lyoness) und TMS / Froe Barnes (Lewis Capaldi, Dua Lipa).
