Minor Cadences and 2-5-1 Progressions
In this lesson, we're going to look at minor cadences and then develop that into a minor 2-5-1, in exactly the same way as we've done with major keys. The principles are exactly the same:
- The idea of a V chord, a dominant chord, creates a sense of expectation and tension.
- This tension is then released to a I chord for a sort of satisfying musical full stop.
Finding the Minor Key
To find a minor key, I want to show you the relationship between a major scale and the relative minor.
- Example: C Major to A Minor
- If we consider C major as our major key, to find the relative minor, we look for the sixth mode, the Aeolian mode.
- Starting from C: C, D, E, F, G leads us up to A minor.
The Aeolian Mode
If I play a C major scale, then play exactly the same thing but starting on an A, I get my Aeolian mode:
- A nice chord of A minor seven will be used as my one for the minor cadence.
Variations in the Minor Scale
The minor scale differs a little bit from the major in that it has more variations.
When we studied the modes, we encountered:
- Dorian mode
- Aeolian mode
- Phrygian mode
All of these can be referred to as minor. You may have also learned melodic and harmonic minor scales in classical music beforehand.
About the instructor
Seit seinem Abschluss am Leeds College of Music (BA Hons) und an der Guildhall School of Music (Post Graduate Diploma in Performance) hat Ollie eine rege und vielseitige Karriere in der Musik aufgebaut. Als Saxofonist ist er live und im Studio mit so unterschiedlichen Künstlern wie Amy Winehouse, Tim Minchin, Bonobo, Frank Turner, dem London Jazz Orchestra, der Hackney Colliery Band, dem Ambient Jazz Ensemble und dem Nelson Riddle Orchestra aufgetreten. Er ist zudem Co-Leader des Jazzquartetts 'Time Is Of The Essence' und komponiert und arrangiert Material für dieses und andere Ensembles. Ollie ist in der Musikpädagogik aktiv, derzeit als Studiengangsleiter der Jazzabteilung an der Guildhall School of Music and Drama (Junior School), wo er Jazzensembles, Big Band und Theorieklassen leitet. Er hat für Schott Music eine Reihe von 'Exploring Jazz'-Büchern geschrieben, die weltweit veröffentlicht werden und in britischen Prüfungslehrplänen enthalten sind. Ollie hat außerdem Workshops für die Oxford University, Pro Corda Strings und BABSWE sowie für die Sommerschulen der Guildhall School of Music geleitet.
