Blues Shuffle Tune Lesson
Introduction
So, I'd like to play with you now a blues shuffle tune. A shuffle is a form of swing, but a little bit more driving, more in common with soul and R&B than just straight ahead jazz.
Groove and Rhythm
- Notice the groove:
- The drums are a little bit more involved.
- The groove's a little bit more driving and propulsive.
Inspiration
This tune is inspired by a song called Nostalgia in Times Square by the great bassist Charles Mingus.
Structure
- The song has an A B form.
- It contains elements of the blues, but I wouldn't say it's a 12-bar blues necessarily.
Key Section: Letter B
Check out letter B and look at the two fives descending:
- B minor to E7
- A minor to D7
- G minor to C7
This is a really unusual way to get back to our home key of D.
Musical Sequence
You'll notice some really nice ways to make that sequence work if you pay attention to how the two fives move down in tones each time.
Conclusion
I tried to focus on creating a really energetic, driving, bluesy sound to have fun with this tune.
Solo
The solo is bluesy at its heart, but it also contains elements of 2-5-1 guide tones, along with little bits of bebop to encompass all the topics we've discussed.
About the instructor
Seit seinem Abschluss am Leeds College of Music (BA Hons) und an der Guildhall School of Music (Post Graduate Diploma in Performance) hat Ollie eine rege und vielseitige Karriere in der Musik aufgebaut. Er ist zudem Co-Leader des Jazzquartetts 'Time Is Of The Essence' und komponiert und arrangiert Material für dieses und andere Ensembles. Ollie ist in der Musikpädagogik aktiv, derzeit als Studiengangsleiter der Jazzabteilung an der Guildhall School of Music and Drama (Junior School), wo er Jazzensembles, Big Band und Theorieklassen leitet. Er hat für Schott Music eine Reihe von 'Exploring Jazz'-Büchern geschrieben, die weltweit veröffentlicht werden und in britischen Prüfungslehrplänen enthalten sind. Ollie hat außerdem Workshops für die Oxford University, Pro Corda Strings und BABSWE sowie für die Sommerschulen der Guildhall School of Music geleitet.
