About this course

The pBone is a lightweight plastic trombone, and this is the perfect first course for anyone, especially kids, who has just been handed one. It is led by Liam Kirkman, president of the British Trombone Society and a trombonist who has played with Lady Gaga, Radiohead, and Michael Bublé.

Liam takes you through the four pBone "STRIPES", the bite-sized pBone learning system, starting from unpacking and looking after your instrument. You will learn how to hold the slide, breathe, and buzz the mouthpiece, then play your first notes, find 3rd and 5th positions, hold long tones, play in time, and even have a go at improvising with a call-and-response game. Working through the levels in order builds the fundamentals the right way so you learn faster and avoid bad habits.

The first 'Stripe' on getting started is free. Go to pbone.co.uk/learn-to-play-trombone to access nine free lessons and a discount. In partnership with The British Trombone Society and pBone trombones.

Liam Kirkman

Liam Kirkman

Liam Kirkman is a trombonist who trained at the Royal Northern College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Over more than 20 years as a player he has worked across an unusually wide range of music, from Radiohead, Michael Bublé, Lady Gaga and the John Wilson Orchestra to English National Ballet, and he has played on numerous film scores and TV soundtracks. A past President of the British Trombone Society, he has taught students at the Royal Academy of Music, the Royal College of Music and Trinity Laban, as well as young players taking their first steps on brass. He believes in staying versatile and keeping an open mind to every kind of music making - the approach he says keeps playing both challenging and rewarding.
