How to Hold the Trombone Properly

And now we're going to talk about how to hold the trombone properly. It's important that we carry ourselves properly, and the word to describe this is posture.

Posture Tips

  • Feet: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart.
  • Head: Keep your head up straight.
  • Eyes: Look straight ahead.
  • Relaxation: Stay nice and relaxed.

Holding the Trombone

Now, let's learn how to hold the trombone:

  1. Left Hand: Take your left hand and give a thumbs up.
  2. Step Back: Take a step back.
  3. Positioning:
    • The thumb goes here.
    • The fingers go through here.
  4. Slide Lock: Check that the slide lock is still on.

Over more than 20 years as a player he has worked across an unusually wide range of music, from Radiohead, Michael Bublé, Lady Gaga and the John Wilson Orchestra to English National Ballet, and he has played on numerous film scores and TV soundtracks. A past President of the British Trombone Society, he has taught students at the Royal Academy of Music, the Royal College of Music and Trinity Laban, as well as young players taking their first steps on brass.
