Introduction to Bebop
In this lesson, I'm going to introduce you to bebop, which is a style of jazz that evolved in the 1940s and 50s.
The Jazz Evolution

In the 1920s and 30s, jazz was centered around large bands, often referred to as big bands.
- Notable big band leaders included:

These bands played dance music effectively in large halls for people to dance to.

Although the music evolved significantly, with many star jazz musicians emerging from these bands, the primary focus remained on dancing and entertainment.
Transition to Small Groups
- By the 1940s, the trend shifted:
- Bands became smaller.
- Jazz transitioned towards the jazz club small group style that we associate with the genre today.
The Quintessential Quintet
- The quintessential quintet of saxophone, trumpet, piano, bass, and drums was born in the bebop era.
Key Figures in Bebop
- The two main protagonists of the bebop style were:
- Charlie Parker (saxophonist)
- Dizzy Gillespie (trumpeter)
These musicians built on the swing style and jazz standards, taking the music in a new and exciting direction.
About the instructor
Depuis l'obtention de son diplôme au Leeds College of Music (BA Hons) et à la Guildhall School of Music (Post Graduate Diploma in Performance), Ollie a bâti une carrière riche et variée dans la musique. En tant que saxophoniste, il s'est produit en concert et en studio avec des artistes aussi divers qu'Amy Winehouse, Tim Minchin, Bonobo, Frank Turner, le London Jazz Orchestra, le Hackney Colliery Band, l'Ambient Jazz Ensemble et le Nelson Riddle Orchestra. Il est également coleader du quartet de jazz 'Time Is Of The Essence', et compose et arrange du matériel pour cette formation et d'autres ensembles. Ollie est actif dans l'éducation musicale, actuellement comme responsable de cours du département jazz de la Guildhall School of Music and Drama (école junior), où il dirige des ensembles de jazz, un big band et des cours de théorie.
