Exploring Variations in "Whole Lot of Shakin'"
Cool! So let's look at some things we can do with the ideas that Jerry Lee plays in "Whole Lot of Shakin'." As you know, while it's cool to sound like Jerry Lee Lewis and replicate his style, it's also nice to be creative and use these ideas in your own improvisation.
Main Groove Variations
Chord Variations
-
Introducing the Sixth:
Why not introduce some slightly different variations of the chord?- Adding a sixth makes a slightly richer sound.
- A sixth is the sixth note of the scale: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
- For example, adding an A to the triad brings a richer feel.
-
Using Inversions:
Try using inversions for those chords. While this works well, it might sound slightly odd on chord V and even chord IV.- Always trust your ear. If something doesn't sound quite right, it probably isn't!
-
C6 to C Minor Six:
Instead of adding the sixth on chord IV, consider turning the C6 into a C minor six.- This produces an interesting sound, almost like an inversion of an F7 with a ninth:
- 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.
This results in a warm sound on chord IV, since you're not moving far from chord I to what would be the seventh on chord IV.
- This produces an interesting sound, almost like an inversion of an F7 with a ninth:
Adding Ninth Chords
- You could also explore ninth chords, for example:
- C7, 9 = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.
- Consider using an inversion, placing the E and G on top.
Assessing the Sound
Does this work on chord V and IV?
- It might sound a bit too "flowery" and not as raw as basic triads or seventh chords.
Left Hand Variations
- In your left hand, consider shifting rather than staying static. Aim to:
- Go up to the seventh.
- Play the seventh in the right hand towards chord IV.
Example:
- Play up to the octave in the left hand, then the seventh.
Chord Familiarity
So, there are many different chordal variations to explore:
- Get to know your sixths, sevenths, and ninths.
- Experiment with different inversions and chord qualities.
- Discover which sounds resonate with you.
You might come up with combinations that others haven't thought of, helping you to develop your unique sound.
Right Hand Techniques
Now, let's look at some of the right-hand techniques he employs in the solo and see what we can do with all that material!
About the instructor
