Applying the First Pattern: "Bile Them Cabbage Down"
We can apply this first pattern to a tune, and the name of the tune is "Bile Them Cabbage Down" in the Key of A Major.
Lyrics and Melody
I think it has words, like a lot of these old-time mountain fiddle tunes have.
"I'm not going to sing it for you. I know you'll be really disappointed, but I'll just try to play it."
Basic Version of the Melody
The really, really basic version of the melody is what I'll show you first, and then we'll change things around a little bit.

Again, using that first pattern, it goes like this:

Okay, I'll do it a little slower.
That's not very interesting sounding for me, but it's a good exercise almost, in getting your hand loose and doing that particular pattern with your pick.
Importance of Staying Loose
I want to reiterate the importance of just trying to stay loose with your right hand.
About the instructor
Tom Bekeny es mandolinista, violinista de fiddle y experimentado profesor de mandolina que ha actuado y enseñado en Estados Unidos y en el extranjero durante más de 40 años, así que cuando desglosa cómo tocar, estás aprendiendo de alguien que ha pasado toda una vida tanto sobre el escenario como en el aula.
