Lesson transcript:
Learning a Fancier Tag Lick
First thing we're going to do is learn to play a little bit fancier tag lick before we dive into the main lesson.
Adding a Slide
Now, we're going to add a little slide into that lick. If you've ever listened to some old Flatt and Scruggs recordings, you've heard that lick a million times.
Roll Consistency
- Sometimes you'll have a spin near the beginning, and sometimes you won't.
- The roll is the same; it's just a matter of leaving a space and not hitting one of those notes.
- All the other notes are in the same place.
Personal Preference
I like to do it mostly this way:
- Usually, I slide to the third fret first of all.
- I tend to slide more often rather than using a hammer-on because it feels more fluid.
- I generally go to the third fret because it also allows for a slide to the fourth fret.
Choosing Between Frets
- Sometimes you want one option, and sometimes you want the other.
- However, I find that usually, the third fret works better for this lick.
