Understanding Chord Sequences

It's also good to notice that the chords come along in a certain predictable sequence.

Chord Patterns

  • G Chord:

    • If this is a G chord:
      • Go up four frets and switch to a D shape, this is still a G chord.
      • Go up three frets from the G and switch to a bar shape, it's still a G chord.
      • From the bar shape, go up four or five frets and you still have a G.
  • D Chord:

    • For a D chord:
      • Start with the D shape, then go up three frets.
      • From the bar shape, go up five frets.

Advanced Concept

In some ways, this is a little advanced, but it's good to have an idea of how it works.

Key Takeaway

The only thing you really have to keep in mind is that there's a predictable place to find other versions of the same chord at any given time, just by knowing how far up to go.
