Music Lesson: Group C Chords

So, we're on to Group C now. No click necessary for these. You'll hopefully recognize a lot of these chord voicings from some of your song selections. Certainly, some of the funkier, jazzier tracks feature some of these chords, so they may be familiar to you.

But again, we need to make sure we know these in a couple of positions:

  • We need to know the root note on the E string
  • We need to know the root note on the A string

So, two voicings for each of these chords.

1. Dominant 7, Sharp 5

  • Root Note: G
  • Voicing: I play this with my thumb on the top, and we get this sound. Really cool sounding chord.

In the Key of D

  • Let's check it out with the root note moved over to the A string.
  • So it's the same chord, but a different voicing of that chord: D7, Sharp 5.

2. Dominant 7, Flat 5

  • This is quite a funky sounding chord.
  • We've been given it in the key of A here.

In the Key of D

  • Let's check it out.
  • If we move that across to the A string, we get D, Dominant Seven, Flat Five.

3. Dominant 7, Sharp 9

  • We've been given it in the key of D.
  • Here it is.

In the Key of A

  • Root note on the E string here (fifth fret), and we're going to get this chord.

4. Dominant 7, B9

  • Here it is in the key of E, as shown in your book.

In the Key of A

  • Finally, let's check it out.
  • For example, we're going to get this chord here.
