Exploring Jimmy Yancey's Bass Lines
There's also a variety of bass lines used by Jimmy Yancey which are slightly different, perhaps from the walking bass line or those driving ones used by Albert Ammons and Pete Johnson. These lines often have a bit more of a Latin flavor to them.
Breakdown of a Simple Bass Line
Let me just break that down for you:
- Very simple.
- Often, you might just crush the minor third to major third, that kind of thing.
Another Jimmy Yancey Bass Line
Another bass line that Jimmy Yancey used to do was this one:
- It adds the fifth, which is simply based on the C triad.
- Adding that fifth definitely adds some weight and enables that kind of snap you can achieve with this bass line.
- It's a bass line you can use at tempo as well.
Again, these are two very simple Jimmy Yancey bass lines, which come from, I guess, a different kind of place.
