My Journey into Music

I got started playing when I was about 13 or 14. I had a really good piano teacher who was trying to get me into gigging, which is what I wanted to do.

Influential Mentorship

  • He had a really good career playing Hammond.
  • He played sessions for all kinds of people.
  • His dad had a really killer sort of rock and roll blues band.

He played me a few records by:

  • Steve Winwood
  • Jimmy McGriff
  • Georgie Fame

I became obsessed with it. He very kindly lent me an old organ of his that was in storage, and it all just kind of kicked off from there.

The Mysterious Tone

I was just obsessed. I heard the tone on records and didn't know what it was.

  • It's kind of a mysterious thing.
  • It's not a piano or a guitar, these kind of obvious instruments.

Then he played me a couple of things, and I sort of thought,

"Hang on, that's that thing that I've always loved but didn't know what it was."

Suddenly, I was just hooked.
