About this course

Joe Glossop is a working organist whose Hammond playing draws on Billy Preston, Booker T. Jones, Ray Charles, Jimmy McGriff and the New Orleans piano of Dr John and James Booker. He has played with Tom Jones, Laura Mvula, Van Morrison and many others.

This course gives you a deep understanding of the Hammond organ and how to play authentically in the soul, jazz and gospel styles. You'll learn the instrument's different sounds and when to reach for each, how and when to bring in the Leslie speaker, and how to adapt these parts for a Nord keyboard - all through classic tunes by Marvin Gaye, Booker T and the MGs, and Brother Jack McDuff, including "There Will Never Be Another You", "You've Got a Friend", "Chicken Pox" and "Memphis in June".

Meet the Guru

Joe Glossop

Joe Glossop is a keyboard player from Sheffield who has made his name on the Hammond organ. He currently holds the organ chair in Tom Jones's touring band, and has played with Van Morrison and James Hunter, as well as on piano and Rhodes. His courses get the real Hammond sound out of any keyboard - drawbar registration, the Leslie, the walking-bass left hand, and the comping and soloing vocabulary of the soul-jazz, blues and rock organ traditions, from Jimmy Smith to Booker T.
