Example 2: Strong Beats in the Bar

In this section, we're going to look at Example 2, focusing on the strong beats of the bar. Remember:

  • The strong beat is always beat one.

Counting the Beats

As we've been doing, let's count:

1, 2, 3, 4.
1, 2, 3, 4.
1, 2, 3, four.

To help differentiate, we're going to play our G note now on beat one.

Playing the G Note

  • The G note is located on the top E string (big E string), which corresponds to fret number three.
  • Use your third finger for this.

We will play the same rhythms as in Example 1:

  • All quarter notes
  • All even
  • All the same

Repeating the Phrase

We have the same example of the first bar repeated three more times, giving us a four-bar phrase.

Strong Beats Breakdown

In the first bar:

  • On beat one, which is our G, pluck slightly harder.

  • Follow this with three open E strings.

  • Pluck the open strings as normal, but a little softer than the G.

Listening for the Downbeat

As you practice, you'll notice:

"You can really feel that downbeat coming down on bar one, which is what the heavy rock sound is all about."

Practice Routine

Let's give that second example a go:

  • As always, I'll play the first time, you play the second time.
  • We'll alternate back and forth twice, with a four-beat count in between every take.

Take a few minutes to practice this slowly before we go over the backing track.

Remember: Focus on getting that strong downbeat a little harder, followed by the open E strings afterwards.
