Exploring Endings in Boogie Woogie
So we've looked at all kinds of stuff today. Let's look at some endings.
How to End a Boogie Woogie Tune
You'll probably be quite glad to know there aren't actually tons of endings. In fact, most boogie woogie tunes end something like this:
If you listen to most of Albert Almond's things, that's kind of it.
He often does a funny little harmony that goes to that Ab. But let's look at the original harmony. It's kind of based on this:
So it's, guess that's the harmony.
You can play around with that. I mean, you could do bigger voicings. Albert sometimes goes straight to that Ab, which is an interesting approach.
It's sort of, I guess, hinting at the F minor. That harmony can be played around with, so why not roll the chords?
Getting Creative
I'm talking about things now just for getting creative with it. Maybe take it away from that very traditional sound and do your own thing with it.
- Why not repeat it?
- So it's like a full sending.
- You could do something like that; I think that's quite fun.
You could play around with those voicings. Rather than doing something traditional, you could do a run over a bass line. Something like this:
- In the left hand, you're just going...
- Or you could do the run over the bass line going down.
So those runs in the right hand, you may be doing something like:
So it's a combination of... It's mainly thirds with the...
So yeah, there are a few ideas for endings!
