Lesson transcript:
Solo on "The Girl I Left Behind Me"
Okay, now we're going to look at a solo on The Girl I Left Behind Me, which is absolutely packed full of these kinds of licks.
Breakdown of the Solo
I need to go through it slowly first. So, we're going to start off with:
-
Similar Lick:
- Second finger over first finger.
- Moving from first position up a third to third position.
-
Diminished Substitution:
- This is a tricky fingering.
-
Transition to D7:
- Then we've got a lick that takes us to the D7.
Lick Details
And then we're into this lick, which is:
- Open E:
- With the first finger sliding down.
- Second finger over third finger.
This lick is taken from Johnny Gimble's Fiddling Around, which is a great tune in itself. So, that will take a bit of work.
- Next Pieces:
- The yodel.
- A syncopated chop.
So, that is a bit of a diminished going into C.
Altered Notes & Hemiola
-
Altered Notes:
- These are jazz elements, which I won't explain, but again, they are in my jazz violin book.
-
Hemiola:
- That's what we call a hemiola, which is a three-note phrase that crosses the bar lines.
-
Augmented Substitution:
- Second finger over first finger.
- Third over second.
- First over open.
- Two over one.
- Three over two.
This will take quite a bit of work to get that.
Practice Tips
I would spend quite a bit of time playing this slowly and then gradually get it up to speed so you can play it along with the backing track.
