Maybe at this point you've pressed pause to practice the things that we've just been talking about. Hopefully, it's starting to sound swingy now for you.
The Journey of Each Phrase
The next thing to focus on is the journey of each phrase. How do we make this music really come alive?
To bring the music alive, we need to think in phrases. Let's try to identify where those phrases are. Luckily, Mark has put the phrases in for us.
- The phrases are marked with a curved line over the top or underneath the music.
- Look on the part; you'll see them clearly marked.
For me, each phrase is like a little story. It has a beginning, a middle, and an end.
We have to know where we're traveling to, it's like a journey. I'm now going to really exaggerate that journey to see if you can hear:
- Where I start
- Where I go to the middle
- Where I end
The first thing I did there was to make sure that all the notes contained in that phrase mean something to each other. It's like words in a sentence.
You would not talk like that to your friends, would you?
So don't do it when you play the trumpet bit, because we always want to join the notes together to make a beautiful sentence.

Ha actuado y grabado en una enorme variedad de estilos con artistas como Quincy Jones, Robbie Williams, Eric Clapton, la Orchestra of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, la Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Michael Buble, Oasis, Michel Legrand, Tony Bennett, Shirley Bassey y Danny Elfman, entre muchos otros.
Como trompeta principal en el West End de Londres, Mike ha actuado en Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, The Producers, Billy Elliot, Guys and Dolls, Saturday Night Fever, My Fair Lady y Spamalot, entre otros. Ha tocado en bandas sonoras de películas como las de James Bond, Harry Potter con la London Symphony Orchestra, la premiada Chicago, Beyond the Sea de Kevin Spacey, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Madagascar y The Corpse Bride. Aparece a la trompeta y la corneta en Mrs Henderson Presents de George Fenton, y a la trompeta en Looking for Eric.
Mike es trompeta principal de la John Wilson Orchestra, nominada a un Grammy, y ha destacado en sus célebres conciertos y grabaciones de los BBC Promenade.
Mike es muy solicitado como profesor y clínico, y es catedrático de trompeta en la Royal Academy of Music y en el Royal College of Music. En abril de 2013 tuvo el orgullo de recibir la prestigiosa Derek Watkins' Chair of Trumpet en la Royal Academy of Music de Londres.
