Music Lesson: Give Me Some Lovin' by The Spencer Davis Group

While we're with The Spencer Davis Group, another track you might be well acquainted with is one called Give Me Some Lovin'.

Main Riff

Steve Wynwood uses a very cranked, distorted organ for the main riff, the main hook of the song.

  • Tone Setup:

    • The only real way to get that tone is to turn the amp up and give it some welly.
    • You don't want to turn it up until you blow your speaker.
    • Start on the stop setting and point that towards the mic a bit.

  • Drawbars:

    • First four drawbars:
      • First three
      • Some of that one
      • Some of the four
      • Number four

Playing the Riff

And the theme that we all know:

  • "I'm not playing that at full volume."
  • If you were to crank that up, you would be really getting those valves cooking.

There might be something like:

"That's kind of how we achieve that. It's valve technology, and it's something special."

Bassline and Technique

Obviously, your baseline would be something like that. But you're going to need two hands to play that riff.

  • Technique: Slide down.
    • He didn't on the record, but you could always use fast.
    • You could always do that halfway through.

Breaking It Down

So, just broken down and played a bit slower, you can see the head riff there.

Verse and Bridge

If you want to get into the verse as well as the bridge:

  • That's just G to C.

The Chorus

And the chorus there, phrase that however you want.

  • You could play it high up for a nice rich tone.
  • It's a very simple tune, so do your thing with it!
