Right Hand Patterns in Music
The next thing we're going to learn is a couple of other right hand patterns.
Gallop Pattern
The first pattern is something we're going to add to our Boom Chicka Boom. We're going to add one note in the space that's called a gallop because it has a galloping sound.
It's also called an alternating thumb roll because it alternates between the thumb and both fingers:
- Thumb - index
- Thumb - middle
- Thumb - index
- Thumb - middle
Reverse Roll
Another pattern is the reverse roll, sometimes referred to as Around the World.
- It's called a reverse roll because it goes in one direction and then the other way.
- This is forward.
Play that nice and slow.
We'll also start that roll on the fifth string. You can do both patterns as well, one then the other. That's a nice way to connect them up if you're playing along with just the C and H chords.
Practicing with Chords
Incidentally, you can practice your chords to these songs just with straight rhythm instead of playing the melody as well.
That was "Bilum Cabbage Down." Just the chords, no melody.
Applying the Reverse Roll
Now let's try just putting this reverse roll, this Around the World roll, into Bilum Cabbage Down. Just to make it a little...
